November 2007

Greetings from Camp Jabulani,

This is our final newsletter edition for 2007. And what a bumper edition it is! We have some very exciting news and stories to share with you, and hope that you will enjoy the gorgeous images of a new addition to our herd.

We have welcomed the third baby to the Camp Jabulani herd in just over a year.

Born to mother Bubi (a 15 year old cow), Zindoga arrived at approximately 02h00 on the 25th September 2007.

The name "Zindoga" was given to the baby by the grooms. It means "alone". Bubi surprised all on arrival at the stables at 05h30 in the morning. There she was proudly standing with a healthy calf (already clean and suckling on mother).

Baby facts:

Name : Zindoga
Height : 93 cm
Weight : 75 kg
Sex : Male
Status : Healthy

The three frolicking youngsters are a delight to behold, adding much entertainment to the daily elephant-back safaris. Click here for further information on the elephant experience at Camp Jabulani, and to see beautiful pictures of the babies.

Visitors to Camp Jabulani have the opportunity to visit The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, located just 25 minutes away from the camp by road.

The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre focuses on the conservation of rare, vulnerable or endangered animals. Cheetah Conservation is one of their core disciplines.

They are actively involved in:

- The breeding of endangered, vulnerable or rare animal species
- The release and establishment of captive-bred cheetahs into the wild
- The promotion of scientific research and development in the wildlife field
- The treatment and rehabilitation of injured wild animals
- The provision of a safe alternative for destructive animals on commercial farms, with a view to ultimately introducing them into conservation areas that can accommodate such animals into their management policies
- The education of learners, students and the general public in conservation activities

Camp Jabulani's guests are able to experience and contribute to conservation, and in so doing - practice responsible tourism, vital to the preservation of our natural resources for the enjoyment of future generations to come.

"Even though we have had excellent sightings of animals over the last couple of months (including buffalo, elephant, hippo and leopard), we were witness to an amazing view of lions resting next to a water hole. They suddenly bounded up and ran in the direction of the sound similar to that of a duiker (a very small antelope). We then rushed in the same direction, and found them with a duiker-kill from a leopard which was retreating from the lions - "tail between the legs". The lions were simply too overwhelming in number and in strength.

That particular day we had three different sightings of leopard in the nearby vicinity.

What an auspicious time in the wild!"

Our recipe this month is a delicious Chocolate Pecan Nut Pie. As a tea-time treat, dessert or a joy on its own, this easy-to-prepare recipe is a must to impress family and friends!

We challenge you to give it a shot, and to send your feedback (with pics) to adine@campjabulani.com. The best account will be given pride of place in the first Camp Jabulani newsletter of 2008!

Chocolate Pecan Nut Pie

Serves 12

Ingredients:
4 tablespoons butter
1 cup dark chocolate chips
1 ½ cups pecan nut halves
3 large eggs
1 cup golden syrup
½ cup light brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla essence
1 unbaked 25cm pie crust (extra points to those who bake their own!)
Optional garnish: whipped cream or ice-cream

Method:
- Preheat over to 180C
- In a saucepan, over very low heat, combine butter and chocolate
- Warm gently. Using a heat-resistant rubber spatula or wooden
spoon, stir frequently and watch closely to remove from heat as soon as chocolate melts. Chocolate will become grainy if over-heated. An alternative is to easily melt the chocolate and butter in a microwave
- Allow to cool slightly
- In a large bowl, using wire whisk, whip the eggs, syrup, brown sugar, vanilla and chocolate mixture
- Pour filling into pie crust
- Bake until set (approximately 60 minutes). Cover edge of pie crust with foil during the last 15 - 20 minutes of baking if it is browning too quickly.
- Remove from over. Cool on a wire rack.
- Top each pie slice with pecan halves, and adorn liberally with cream, ice-cream and/ or strawberries.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporting partners and friends. 2007 has been an excellent year for us. We recognize that without our peers in the travel industry, we would not be where we are today. We are humbled by the relationships that have been built, the lessons that we have learned and the reaction of guests from around the world when they visit us and experience the elephants.

We wish you a remarkable and positive end to the year, and look so forward to continuing our journey in 2008.

With warm wishes,

The Camp Jabulani Family
