Greetings from Camp Jabulani,

Already mid-year, and it is time for an update from Africa's premier elephant back safari operation. We have had an exciting year to date, and have welcomed many new visitors, and some old friends too.

To kick off this edition of Camp Jabulani's news, we have included a wonderful piece written in our guest book by guests of Harley Davidson South Africa who participated in the Harley on Safari journey. Florence and Martin Rothman (UK) said:

" This place touched my soul. What a privilege. What an experience. Thank you so so so much!

Joy caresses the soul
And kisses the heart
Behold the essence of
Unity and unique connection
Lovely landscape
And magnificent beast
Nestle in the arms of God's
Intent."

Enjoy this edition - and let us know if you have any suggestions or comments for our electronic news platform. Something you would like to know or see - we will make it happen!

Until Spring Time,

All of us at Camp Jabulani

CAMP JABULANI IS A GOLD ACHIEVER!

We are thrilled to have been selected as GOLD ACHIEVER in the 2008 AA Tr avel Guides & American Express®

Accommodation Awards Programme.

Thank you to those who have supported us over the last few years!

A DEVASTATING LOSS!

It was with great sadness that we bade farewell to a very old friend and a loyal employee. Anastasia Khambula worked with us since March 1991.

From Adine Roode, MD of Camp Jabulani:

Anastasia was the first assistant of Lente Roode - her duties included picking up parcels, doing errands, and answering the phone.

She was one of the first black ladies in the old South Africa with a drivers license! A truly remarkable woman. Full of fire, strength and humour.

She dropped me at school in those days - listening to my random chatter and never forgetting to ask "How was your day?".

No matter what task she was entrusted, she always got the job done - in that you could trust.

We bought her a Nissan 1600 "bakkie" (vehicle) last year, and she was so proud. Never would a Friday pass without her proudly washing her car.

She also looked after my kids and took so much care. She was well known where ever she went. Everyone respected her. She was part of the Roode family.

We can't thank her enough for her devoted committment. I wish I could have taken away her pain in the last bit of her life.

She is leaving behind her sister, and all of us. We are going to miss her, not only as a member of our team, but also as part of the family."

EVERYONE NEEDS A BIT OF CHOCOLATE!

Chocolate with a high cocoa content, is a rich source of the flavonoids epicatechin and gallic acid, which are thought to possess cardioprotective properties. Cocoa posesses a significant antioxidant action. Some studies have also observed a modest reduction in blood pressure.

CONSERVATION IN ACTION!

We are proud of our Camp as well as our environment. After years of careful conservation of the reserve, and by practising sound environmental policies, we have started to reap the rewards.

Over the last year, we have enjoyed an 89% increase in lion sightings, and our leopard sightings are becoming more frequent too. In fact, a female leopard recently gave birh to three young cubs on the reserve and we see them very often - wonderful interactive sighting opportunities.

Leopards are territorial predators and it takes a long time for them to establish themselves. But once established, future generations tend to establish themselves in the vicinity.

GLIMPSE OF - ISAAC CLIVE SHIBURI - A MEMBER OF THE TEAM

Isaac Clive Shiburi was born on the 12th of January 1979 in Acornhoek. Isaac's parents worked at the Kapama Game Reserve and he was raised on the reserve during his preschool years. He attended the Timbavati Primary and Magwagwaza High School in Acornhoek. During school holidays he worked as a general laborer for pocket money. When he finished his schooling he was offered a permanent maintenance position on the reserve. In January 2003 Camp Jabulani was built and guess who was part of the building team? No one other than Isaac! When the Camp was completed he was offered a permanent position as Gardener. He worked in this capacity at the Camp for 2 years. His dream was to become a butler at Camp Jabulani and management decided to give Isaac the opportunity to seek his dream. During daytime Isaac worked as Gardener and after hours Isaac trained as a butler. Isaac also had to overcome the Language barrier, and he learned to speak English.

Three years later and Isaac is one of the best in the business!!!He can speak 5 languages, of which English is one. In his spare time he likes to watch football - he is a keen Kaizer Chiefs supporter and listens to Whitney Houston his favorite music artist. Isaac's idol and roll model is Nelson Mandela and his dream is to become Assistant Manager at Camp Jabulani one day.

"JABULANI - MEET ...... JABULANI!"

What a funny day! Jabulani took a "stroll" to the camp, and found himself face to face with .... himself - in the reflection of the glass doors of the lounge area. He was most incensed that another elephant was "raining on his parade", and began to make all sorts of menacing advances to his counterpart.

He was most surprised when Carl, the camp manager, folded back the doors - and magically got rid of the other animal...

He is truly such a character, our Jabulani. Click here to read more about this remarkable animal, the namesake of Camp Jabulani.

We are pleased to advise you that Camp Jabulani has gone wireless! Despite being in the middle of the African wild, you can still remain connected to the world....

We are now offering HOT STONE THERAPY at
Camp Jabulani's spa.
