"I stayed at some pretty incredible places during my time in South Africa, but Camp Jabulani left a big impression on me and I suspect, a part of my heart has remained behind. It was, hands down, the most amazing experience I had. So great it was, that I’ve recommended three nights in an itinerary to some friends of mine who are looking to travel to South Africa for their first time.

I think you are doing so much there that is right. You have a beautiful camp. The lodge is so impressive when you first walk in. Hints and treasures of your family and your life are everywhere, which makes it so warm and inviting. The staff was wonderful and our game driver was so knowledgeable. Danie was patient, kind and you can tell he has an incredible passion for what he does. Your chef was fantastic and what a treasure! From the roast duck to the Amarula egg custard – each meal was amazing.

I also liked the way you schedule game drives. It’s on the guest schedule and not some pre-set starting time at the crack of dawn if you don’t prefer to go out that early. The game was amazing there – the roar of lions each night at 3AM woke me up and I had a huge grin on my face! The room was gorgeous as well – well appointed, perfectly sized and so private. I loved it!

Of course, there was Little Jabulani and his band of merry makers. I adored the elephants and had to fight the urge to touch them when the mood struck me. For whatever reason, they were fascinated with my shoes – must be the smell of my horse barn on them! At first, I was apprehensive about riding them. For some reason, the idea of riding elephants seems unnatural, but as Danie said – in order to judge, you must experience, so I did. I would have much preferred going on a walking safari with them at my side. It would have been thrilling as well. They were so gentle and kind – I rode Joe and Jimmy (his new name is “Last Place Jim”). I think my favorite elephant activity was just watching them enjoy themselves at the pond. I was sad to see them leave and had I been there longer, I would have definitely had that experience again".

Adult bull elephants go through musth, a specific reproductive condition, about once a year, and this state may last for only a few days, or for three months or longer. The musth glands, or temporal glands, swell and secrete a liquid: this can often be seen as a thick secretion running down the side of the elephants face.
