Lente’s intense love of Africa and its’ animals started many years ago when she was a little girl. Her father had a farm near Hoedspruit (now part of Kapama) and she was given an orphaned elephant to look after. Caring for this animal was the beginning of a life-long passion for conservation.

Calves can continue to drink from their mothers (while also eating vegetation) until the age of three years; in some cases 5 years, although the norm is 2 years. If a nursing mother dies, her calf may be adopted by other nursing mothers.
